Talk about seriously cool! Angelique Houtkamp is a Dutch tattoo artist, painter and shoe designer who brings tears to eyes! Angelique is extremely passionate (check out those tattoed biceps!) about the real/perceived romance of old school tattoos, the heyday of the wild west and the mystery of Spain. Olay! Angelique’s graphic world is filled with sultry pin-ups, broken hearts, swallows, sailing ships, spunky cowgirls and the like; coupled with a big dose of nostalgia. Angelique’s work also features in magazines, on CD covers, postcards, clothing and the like. More recently, she and Sydney’s Outre Gallery have a book that they’ve collaborated on titled Tattoo Mystique with a launch scheduled at the gallery for Friday 16 October 2009. I might try and make it myself for a gawk and a glass of fizzzz….
What a dude! Painter, illustrator and designer Josh “Shag” Agle is LE GRAND MÊSTRE of the 50s/60s swinging lounge aesthetic which embraces illustrative finesse, vivid colours and funkadelia with a large dose of tongue-in-cheek humour. Shag’s paintings are influenced by avante-garde animation of the early fifties and sixties as well as generic advertising art of the same era. His flat perspective paintings, which are collected by Shagadelics globetrotters, celebrate consumerism through depictions of characters who drink, smoke and socialise in fantasy settings (sounds like my ideal world!). If you live in Australia and want to purchase some of Shag’s work (I did and never regretted it), Outre Gallery is the place to go. Or better still, if you live in Sydney, just take a Sunday stroll to this gallery for some VERY inspired viewing…Just try and walk out without something under your arm.
