Toda Design Studio are responsible for a string of workshops titled “Sustainable Exchange: Methods and Practices for Collaborative Partnerships.” These eco-savvy events feature artists and fashion designers who share how they utilise sustainable design in their work; while they illuminate the potential of sustainable consumption, production and business methods.
The workshops sound like fun: finger crocheted with Eko-Lab, an NY based design collective who specialise in eco-friendly, hand-detailed womenswear and accessories; create jewellery using old-world techniques and ethically sourced materials; and fashion drawing/painting with a designer who makes custom-made clothing from recycled, repurposed or organic fabric.
The United States based Sticks & Stones has flown under the mainstream radar since they launched their stunning accessories line in 2009. As the name implies their products feature natural materials such as wood, fine metals and precious stones. Their recently launched collection finds these designers adding an intriguing set of new materials to their lineup, with jewellery made from deer antlers, purpleheart wood and vegetable ivory.
As deer naturally shed their antlers each season, these animals are completely unharmed while the resourceful Sticks & Stones make beautiful use of an otherwise unused material. Fabulous stuff.
Aren’t these silver plated jewellery tags the most? I’ve just ordered a whopping big batch of them to brand all my jewellery. I “heart” them.
I woke this morning to the dreadful reality that toxins from denim production along China’s Pearl River are bleeding into the famed waterway at an alarming rate. This stretch of river, that is often referred to as the “lifeblood of the world’s factory floor” is the location of countless industrial properties that produce the world’s textiles, toys, mobile phones and the like.
It is also the blue jean capital of the world. So, how many jeans are we talking? Around 200 million pairs of jeans per year (!!!). This includes around 60 foreign brands which equates to just under half the 450 million pairs of jeans sold annually in the United States. However, this massive production of denim is poisoning China’s water supply with excessive amounts of chemicals, carcinogens, heavy metals and other nasty pollutants. The most disturbing are satellite images which reveal the part of the Pearl River adjacent to Xintang’s blue jean factories which run a distinct blue/black; while the nearby riverbank is a dumping ground for textile scraps, pig carcasses and other refuse. It’s enough to put you off wearing denim for life! More on this at CNN.
It’s official! Miss Moss fashion and accessories is set to exhibit at Melbourne’s LifeInstyle at Melbourne’s Flemington Racecourse Grandstand! This trade only event – which attracts around 35,000 visitors from around Australia and abroad - provides the opportunity for lifestyle, fashion and children’s wear brands to strut their stuff. After receiving the news yesterday, I spent the night tossing and turning about the why’s and wherefore’s i.e. stand width, height, display; then there’s travel, marketing, sampling..my head is in a whirl…hurrah! xxx
Hunt for fabric/meet with fashion distributor/dinner with fashion designer/check fashion samples/: these are just some of the things on my SYDNEY TO DO LIST. Planning a trip to Sydney from the South Coast is not as easy as it sounds. First of all, it takes 4 hours from where I live (ouch!), which is a little too far for my liking. I adore the serenity and beauty of Milton & Bawley Point, but the big smoke is just so ALIVE! I find that my SYDNEY TO DO LIST is sooooo lonnnngg by the time I get there that I end up squeezing every ounce out of every day/scheduling meetings back-to-back, but I still don’t end up with enough time. Maybe I need to buy a city crash pad! Now there’s an idea…

Royal Hall of Industries - The venue for Life Instyle Sydney
The Australian Life Instyle Trade Fair is a snazzy, boutique event, held twice annually in Sydney and Melbourne. It’s perhaps best described as a stylish alternative to it’s more mainstream cousins, which can be – let’s admit it – a tad TOO LARGE to get your head around, and therefore lacking in a certain intimacy/personality/je ne sais quoi. Personally, some of those BIG trade events make you feel like they’re gonna eat you up and spit you out….But then again, that’s just me… (more…)

Who needs to visit an art gallery? Print in fashion is not new, but with technological advancements, innovation and a dash of flair a surge of photosynthesis prints provide an almost 3D effect to finished garments. This funky fusion of colour, print and real-life-drama makes the wearer look like a sculptural installation that moves. One brand which applies this with aplomb is Ostwald Helgason – a forward-thinking fashion duo which includes Susanne Ostwald and Ingvar Helgason. The German and Icelandic designers met in London, won a couple of design grants from the German government and showed their first joint collection at Paris Fashion Week shortly thereafter. Ostwald Helgason launched in 2006 and stocks far flung countries around the globe – such as Denmark, Iceland and Hong Kong. What about Australia guys?
