A Sleepy Saturday

It’ a sleepy Saturday, raining lightly, clouds in the sky. Don’t feel like doing much except hanging out with the kids and pottering about the house. I’ve got the looonngg drive to Sydney ahead of me tomorrow. It’s a bit of a killer; a four hour slog to be exact. Don’t much feel like it…but business beckons.

Sydney Calls Miss Moss

Hunt for fabric/meet with fashion distributor/dinner with fashion designer/check fashion samples/: these are just some of the things on my SYDNEY TO DO LIST. Planning a trip to Sydney from the South Coast is not as easy as it sounds. First of all, it takes 4 hours from where I live (ouch!), which is a little too far for my liking. I adore the serenity and beauty of Milton & Bawley Point, but the big smoke is just so ALIVE! I find that my SYDNEY TO DO LIST is sooooo lonnnngg by the time I get there that I end up squeezing every ounce out of every day/scheduling meetings back-to-back, but I still don’t end up with enough time. Maybe I need to buy a city crash pad! Now there’s an idea…

What’s the Life Instyle Tradefair?

Royal Hall of Industries - The venue for Life Instyle Sydney

The Australian Life Instyle Trade Fair is a snazzy, boutique event, held twice annually in Sydney and Melbourne. It’s perhaps best described as a stylish alternative to it’s more mainstream cousins, which can be – let’s admit it – a tad TOO LARGE to get your head around, and therefore lacking in a certain intimacy/personality/je ne sais quoi. Personally, some of those BIG trade events make you feel like they’re gonna eat you up and spit you out….But then again, that’s just me… (more…)

Ostwald Helgason Fashion Funks it up!

Who needs to visit an art gallery? Print in fashion is not new, but with technological advancements, innovation and a dash of flair a surge of photosynthesis prints provide an almost 3D effect to finished garments. This funky fusion of colour, print and real-life-drama makes the wearer look like a sculptural installation that moves. One brand which applies this with aplomb is Ostwald Helgason — a forward-thinking fashion duo which includes Susanne Ostwald and Ingvar Helgason. The German and Icelandic designers met in London, won a couple of design grants from the German government and showed their first joint collection at Paris Fashion Week shortly thereafter. Ostwald Helgason launched in 2006 and stocks far flung countries around the globe – such as Denmark, Iceland and Hong Kong. What about Australia guys?

I.D Magazine is D.E.A.D!

It’s an outrage! I.D. Magazine, the oldest product design magazine in the United States, is closing it’s doors after more than half a century in business. The final issue will be out in January. The official line for axing the publication includes: dwindling print ad revenue, the specialised needs of the magazines’ readers, and the wealth of information available for free. What does such a move signal for the future of the print industry? Or has most of the world moved online anyway? Any thoughts?

Nike Embrace Laser Cut Technology

Nike Laser Cut Designs

Can laser-cut designs really enhance player performance? These shirts are part of Nike’s Sphere Macro React line of men and women’s golf apparel which feature laser-cut vents that open when the player sweats and close when dry. Gimic or biomimicry? You be the judge. Read more on what’s next in the evolution of textile design at the fab Ponoko blog. And if this topic really tickles your fancy, there’s more info on fibre2fashion.

Dreaming of Dior

Dreaming of Dior

Isn’t life funny? Get this: my husband purchased the same gift for Christmas that I also purchased for my mother! Of all the thousands, well millions, really, of possible choices available out there, we were both taken in by the cover and then the contents of Dreaming of Dior, a new book published by Harper Collins. This gorgeously tactile publication, that encites such bizarre behaviour as clutching and caressing, traces the fashion adventures of author Charlotte Smith who had the good fortune of inheriting 5000 pieces of vintage clothing from her godmother, Doris Darnell. Each piece in this extraordinary collection, which dates from 1790 to 1995, has had a life of its own — this is where Charlotte steps in. She recounts whimsical and fascinating adventures which take the reader to cocktail parties in Monte Carlo, art galleries in Paris, weddings in Italy and the like. However, the book would not be complete without the stunning, exotic and unique illustrations by Grant Cowan. The cover is a real winner complete with touchy-feely felt and scrumptious black and hot pink a-la-miss-moss! I love it!
