MR PIXEL - A.K.A THE VERY TALENTED CRISTIAN ZUZUNAGA

Is colour contagious? Looks like the passion for a painterly palette has spilled over from this year’s fashion ranges into the design realm. (For rainbow inspired fashion examples, check out: Josh Goot; Basso and Brooke and Marc Jacobs) Spanish born designer Cristian Zuzunaga (now London based) has zoomed in on colour, literally, to create a new print design perspective. THAT’S a jump!

This truly spectacular example of design was masterminded by Julien de Smedt of the Copenhagen based JDS Architects. The truly astounding Holmenkollen Ski Jump in Oslo, Norway recently came out tops in an international design competition, but the project won’t be unveiled until the World Championships in 2011. The talented Mr. De Smedt has a swag of design awards under his belt. In 2004, his Stavanger Concert Hall, was applauded “the world’s best concert hall” at the Venice Biennale; while his Maritime Youth House was nominated for the Mies van der Rohe Award and later took out London’s AR+D Award. For an in depth interview with Julien have a look at the interviews section on Designboom.

Shagadelic Baby!!!

What a dude! Painter, illustrator and designer Josh “Shag” Agle is LE GRAND MÊSTRE of the 50s/60s swinging lounge aesthetic which embraces illustrative finesse, vivid colours and funkadelia with a large dose of tongue-in-cheek humour. Shag’s paintings are influenced by avante-garde animation of the early fifties and sixties as well as generic advertising art of the same era. His flat perspective paintings, which are collected by Shagadelics globetrotters, celebrate consumerism through depictions of characters who drink, smoke and socialise in fantasy settings (sounds like my ideal world!). If you live in Australia and want to purchase some of Shag’s work (I did and never regretted it), Outre Gallery is the place to go. Or better still, if you live in Sydney, just take a Sunday stroll to this gallery for some VERY inspired viewing…Just try and walk out without something under your arm.
