Being a girl means so many things. It can be wonderful. Fun, frivolous, fabulous. At times, heartbreaking and hard. We live through so many different eras. At times, we feel solid, set and satisfied. Other times, our very foundations feel like shifting sands. Our needs change according to our age and experience. Daughter, mother. Sister, friend. Girlfriend, lover. Individual.
I just finished reading a brilliant book titled “Just Kids” by writer, performer, poet + visual artist Patti Smith. This New York Times bestseller is a memoir of her relationship with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, their coming of age in New York in 1970s and their ambitions to be artists. It is a deeply touching story. It’s also a quick read, perfect for taking on a holiday or a plane trip. I absolutely loved it + would absolutely recommend it. 10 out of 10! This book rocks.
“It is said that children do not distinguish between living and inanimate objects; I believe they do. A child imparts a doll or tin soldier with magical life-breath. The artist animates his work as the child his toys,” Patti Smith from Just Kids.
“I imagined myself as Frida to Diego, both muse and maker. I dreamed of meeting an artist to love and support and work with side by side,” Patti Smith from Just Kids.
“For life is the best thing we have in this existence. And if we should desire to believe in something, it should be a beacon within. This beacon being the sun, sea, and sky, our children, our work, our companions and, most simply put, the embodiment of love,” Patti Smith.
Anyone know where I can get a really hot Patti Smith T-Shirt?
Colour! What would we do without it? The world would be so drab without the visual delights that many of us take for granted. I am always so unbelievably inspired by colour and the joy that the simple pleasure of seeing brings. Flowers, art, nature. The ocean, the desert, the sky. Silly, childish drawings. Scattered toys. Candles, coals, bonfires. Kitchen bench top, backyard shed, old building. Aged bricks. Fields of green grass, corn, frangipani trees. Sunsets. Shells. An artists paintbox. A rack of ornate shoes. Oriental jackets. Strange socks. Decorative Ties. A single pair of red stilettos.
These “Black Sheep” images are from the amazing weheartit. This site features millions of images – discovered, shared and posted by people like you and me. It’s a great place to look for inspired visual ideas, concepts and such. Well worth a look. I simply love these so called “black sheep” images. So evocative. The world needs a bit more punk/grunge action. After all, where would we be without the Patti Smith’s of this world? Suddenly, Johnny….
So, I’ve been a very busy little bee, plugging away at my new look MISS MOSS website. It’s still very much in its infancy (sorry!), so I apologise if you have been trying to find and/or purchase something but have been unable to. The final version isn’t far away, promise! It’s out with the old and in with the new. While it’s still a work in progress I’m working towards a fresher, more contemporary site + branding which will reinvigorate online shopping + life in general at the MM HQ. Plans in the pipeline also feature the inclusion of other brands for sale in our e-boutique. Watch this space!
I’ve decided to set up an eBay store to sell my MISS MOSS {fashion} wares…Ohhhh, dear! What have I done? At this stage of the proceedings I think it’s a good idea, but we shall see. The plan is to give it 12 months and see what transpires. Mmmmm…I am a little betwxt/between. Any promptings would be appreciated.
I’m so thrilled to be working in a town that I love so much. Milton, NSW, really rocks my socks. The other night as I drove home from Sydney, after a big weekend selling MISS MOSS wares at the Kirribilli Markets I was delighted to see the lights flashing on the awning of the historic Milton Theatre. The legendary U.S Tony Joe White was in town and how I yearned to be inside listening to his wonderful vibes. What a man! Milton has seriously upped the ante in the past few years and is now a highlight on the South Coast of NSW. It boasts all manner of hotels, cafes, retail stores and other businesses. One of my current favorites is Rubee & Mee. I purchased a very scrumptious woolen dress from these folk just the other day, while the eclectic and ever interesting Chieftan Trading Co. is my true shop of choice in the village. My recent purchase, from this stores ever lovely hostess Jenny, was a selection of limited edition prints. But you can expect much more in this store – ceramics, jewellery and homewares and such. If a serious coffee and wholesome food is on your radar try Pilgrims Cafe, the ONLY cafe in town. Mmmmmmm….

Until this morning I didn’t realise that Princess Beatrice and Donald Trump had anything in common. But, now I’m convinced they do. This errrrrm hat was worn by Princess Beatrice at last weeks Royal Wedding, while a trusted source informed me that Donald Trump wore his creation while at the Birth Registry Office in Hawaii only just the day before. High fashion? Looks like a tape worm if you ask me. Ohhhh..sometimes it feels good to be a bit nasty.
I spent the morning looking at fashion e-tailers. I’m currently interested in hooking up with those based in the US + UK + NZ. If anyone has any suggestions I would be most enthused. In my travels I found some interesting leads. These include bluefly, shopbop, + birdmotel. LOVE to find someone, somewhere who will love and cherish the MISS MOSS brand such as I do – in an e-tail capacity of course. xxx
