Long time between drinks..

Yes, it has been a long time between drinks. No blog posts since the end of last year etc..Business has been absolutely cracking along. Our new space is a sensation and customers (bless y’all) are loving it. The response, to be frank, has been overwhelming. Here we are on the other side of the mad of the Christmas rush (all still standing and smiling) with Easter looming in the distant future. Lots of very interesting plans afoot with new designs, designers and quirky winter ponchos on the way. Hooray! Below is a picture of yours truly in our new Milton space. Yours in quirk, MMx

Out with the old. In with the new.

It is a very exciting time here at Miss Moss. After a winter spent in the Snowy Mountains, I had time to reflect about where things were up to with my business. I kept the online part of my business chugging along (thankyou customers!) while I closed the retail space for the season. This was possibly due to an upstairs studio space (no street front) which was good while it lasted but always felt a little “neither here nor there” i.e was it a shop or wasn’t it? At the end of the day, it was an experiment that paid off. I have never really dreamt of opening a retail space, but the whole thing simply occurred organically and guess what, I found that I enjoyed it!

When I returned to the South Coast (and it’s glorious weather) I realised just how much I love it here and that it was time to take the next step in my life and business. A few spaces came up , but I was keen to wait for all the “ducks to line up on the wall” before I made a decision. And guess what? They really did when a few aborted plans fell by the wayside and a wonderful heritage space, right at the pedestrian crossing in Milton, came up — I jumped at it!!!  So now, I have the arduous task of re-configuring the shop and sorting out stock but it will be a wonderful move. I can feel it in my bones. I hope to see you there soon. There are wonderful things in the air. MMx

New Miss Moss Company Crest

I am absolutely loving our new logo/crest. It has a wonderful old world feel about it yet it is altogether modern, organic and it packs a punch. This is the work of Sydney’s Red Pepper Graphics the go-to designers for bespoke work such as this. This will appear on the facade of our new building and across all of our branding. Love!

All in a Days Work: The Daily Grind at MISS MOSS

It’s been an interesting period in the store. We’ve seen all sorts of people come and go – many walk into the space and spend time looking, touching, trying; some stop by for a chat , directions or advice; others are on a mission – they are after a certain something for a a special event. But everyone appears to relish the experience. Some recent comments include: “There is nothing like this in Sydney!”; “I have to buy something just to say that I was here.”; “Next time I come, I am bringing all my friends.” Geesh, we love you guys!

While we’re chuffed that our humble store is such a sensory experience for our customers, there is a lot that goes on behind the scenes. There is the frequent re-merchandising (don’t want things to look stale); inventory lists (need to know how much we have of everything); buying, importing and travel (the latter is a real pain, I can tell you!); marketing (need to get out there); e-newsletters updates (that reminds me, I haven’t done that in a while); website housekeeping for this blog and webstore and our mini sites on hardtofind and downthatlittlelane; daily/weekly social media updates via facebook, twitter, pinterest, instagram and such. This does not include designing our in house fashion accessories (also a real pain!) and liaising with our manufacturers in The Phillipines, Bejing and India. But do you know what? I am not complaining. I love it. My customers love it. And as long as that remains the case – long live MISS MOSS. Keep trudging up the stairs to our store and enjoy the experience. Following are some recent photos (taken on my phone, apologies for the quality) of some chuffed customers and in-situ shots. Have a great day.

The very spunky Melinda Jayne wears one of our recent imports. This delectable fair trade item is made in India from 100% cotton and features block printing, also done by hand. She could not have been happier with her purchase. She looks absolutely stunning, don't you think?

This is Anna. She waltzed in a few weekends ago looking stunning but left looking even better when she spotted our MISS MOSS brand Palm Cove necklace and bracelet that perfectly matched her attire. She was absolutely chuffed.

And here is me (not a customer but a mere technicality) wearing the aforementioned 100% cotton/fair trade brand that is a new addition to our store. This hot little number is called the Shanghai Dress and it goes in and out in all the right places. They only just arrived on Friday and I only have a few left! Crikey!

Clothing Conversion Chart for Women

As both a designer and buyer/importer, I am perpetually perplexed by the conversion of standard sizes of clothing across the globe i.e. an Australian size 10 – although an “S” on home turf – is frequently “M” in the United States and “XS” in the United Kingdom. Confused? I am confronted by this conundrum at least three to four times a week and at such times find myself scrabbling for information, online and/or elsewhere. To end this silliness I decided to set up a definitive Clothing Conversion Chart for Women on this website. What a relief. I shall scrabble no more.

Morocco in a Retro Caravan…

I’ve been thinking a lot about travel lately. I guess it’s because I’m off to Thailand in a few weeks and that my mum is on a whirlwind tour through Asia and Europe – lucky girl. I’ve been thinking not only about places to go – Prague, Moscow, Morocco and such- but how to arrive at those places – train, plane, automobile. This entire process, of course, led me to start daydreaming about retro caravans – those sleek yet utterly whimsical machines of yesteryear. It really wouldn’t matter where you went with one of these – the backyard would even be fun. Oh, dream on….

It's understandable why this 1950s caravan is called Constance. Love it!

MISS MOSS loves Mar Y Sol

We’re absolutely loving the latest products in our online and retail store – and so too, are our customers – these products are flying out the door! Mar Y Sol is a socially responsible accessories brand that collaborates with artists in New York and artisans in Madagascar.  Mar Y Sol design and create authentic accessories made by hand using natural materials sourced sustainably from Madagascar’s precious forests.  The sale of these products enable families to gain economic independence and promotes environmental conservation.

Laurel Brandstetter launched Mar Y Sol, formerly Mad Imports, in 2003 as an outgrowth of a Madagascar-based community development project.  While cultivating relationships with artisans in Madagascar she partnered with fashion designers and other creators in New York City to develop an inspired collection that celebrates Madagascar’s unique raw materials and incomparable craftsmanship.  This cross cultural design process resulted in a brand that is recognised for its vibrant sensibility and imaginative use of materials, colour and texture.  Mar Y Sol’s products have since been featured in dozens of fashion magazines and are available in boutiques, specialty retailers and department stores around the globe. Now you can by them in Australia via MISS MOSS online and in our retail store located in sunny Milton, New South Wales.
