Turkish artist Meric Canatan photographed and illustrated this portrait and sketch series directly from his iPad. For the shots he used the popular app, Instagram, while he sketched using the Sketch app. Aren’t they extraordinary results? For more click here.

You gotta love the ABC for its arts/cultural programs. This weekend I was mesmerized by a spot about Canberra stencil/graffiti artist E.L.K who uses spray-cans to conduct his work. He is an autodidact, but the art form he began messing around with because ‘he needed something to do’ has started to gain him international attention and a swag of awards.
When you see an E.L.K stencil, it is difficult to figure out how something so photo-realistic could be created with a spray-can. And amazingly enough, his “Wake up to the Stink” stencil {above} that features Jesus in a gas mask was on a recent cover of Australia’s Art Monthly magazine. For more, check out elkstensils.
Prolific, free-spirited Australian artist Margaret Olley has died at her home in Sydney’s Paddington, aged 88. Over a career which spanned more than six decades, the Lismore-born artist became one Australia’s most loved and lauded artists.
As well as being a prolific artist, Olley has also been one of the most-painted figures in Australian art. Her portrait by Ben Quilty won this year’s Archibald Prize. William Dobell’s portrait of her won the prize in 1948. She once described herself as “a one-woman band, too independent to be subservient to anyone”. RIP Margaret Olley.
What’s not to love about NY based designer extraordinaire Karim Rashid? Check out these sample projects: a sound absoorbtion panel (in HOT pink – me like!): a very funky restaurant fit-out (can’t say our local restaurants look like this!) ; and a home interior space (very sci-fi- when can I move in?). I’ve always been a big fan of Karim’s after I first stumbled upon his work when I worked for MONUMENT magazine around 15 years ago. His repertoire includes design for furniture, products, interior spaces, packaging, art, fashion and such. What a multi-tasker! ANd how about his art work below. Retro with a futuristic edge. Love the colours.

Colour is a wonderful thing. It has such an effect on how you feel. These wonderful paintings by artist by Berlin based Theo Altenberg, make me feel like I want to jump into the paintings themselves and explore these intriguing, magical landscapes. And what an interesting, multi-talented artist Altenberg is. Not only does he paint, he also engages in many other artistic genres: acting, writing, photography. He’s even played the role of Andy Warhol in a 1991 film, Andy’s Cake, directed by Terese Panoutsopoulo. Who said men can’t multi-task?
I am just loving body art at the moment. What an amazing expression + art form. What an extraordinary piece of work this is. For more click here.

LULU DK an interiors company (based in NY) headed by designer Lulu deKwiatkowski. Along with textiles, LULU DK also produce wallpaper, bedding and other custom designed interiors products. I happened upon this company through Lulu’s blog, Trail of Inspiration which really is rather lush, lovely and lively. The main LULU DK website also features a quote by Truman Capote which reads: “The freedom to pursue an aesthetic quality in life is an extra dimension, like being able to fly while others work.” Fine words!

These funky pups are the work of artist Robert Bradford, who creates life-sized, as well as over-sized sculptures from other peoples refuse. If you think it looks like Bradford has no idea what he’s doing, think again. He abandoned a career in psychotherapy to sell these little beauties for around US$19,000 a pop. I might just check out what’s in the recycling bin.
